The United Kingdom has announced an initial investment of £100 million ($124.8 million) to create a joint task force between the government and industry focused on artificial intelligence (AI) development.
The task force’s objective is to create safe and reliable foundation models that will secure the UK’s sovereign capabilities and promote widespread adoption and establish the UK’s position as a science and technology superpower by 2030.
According to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, by funding the latest technologies with the help of their established skilled taskforce, they can maintain their position as the leader in creating dependable and secure AI, which will play a crucial role in shaping a more innovative economy in the UK.
Michelle Donelan, Secretary of Science, Innovation, and Technology, noted that when advanced AI is developed responsibly, it has the potential to bring about a transformative impact across various industries. According to Donelan, AI could facilitate the development of novel medical treatments, address climate change, enhance public services, and stimulate economic growth while ensuring sustainability.
Donelan highlighted the need to act promptly to leverage the opportunities that AI offers. She also confirmed that the task force would prioritize developing the safety and reliability of such systems to ensure that the public and businesses have the trust they need to adopt this technology and fully realize its benefits.
In Donelan’s words:
“To ensure such leadership, the greatest capability we can develop is in the safety and reliability of such systems. This will ensure that the public and business have the trust they need to confidently adopt this technology and fully realise its benefits. That is exactly what this task force will prioritise.”
The investment in the task force represents the UK’s commitment to maintaining its leadership position in the emerging field of AI.
