LimeWire, a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, formerly a peer-to-peer file-sharing platform, has launched a new game that combines nostalgia for music piracy with the opportunity to win cryptocurrency prizes.
LimeWire was a popular music downloading service in the early 2000s. On April 13, it was reintroduced as a historical music downloading game, featuring a Microsoft XP operating system theme, now running on Web3.
To participate in the LimeWire Game, players must provide their email addresses to access the browser-based game, which imitates an outdated Windows operating system and uses the LimeWire theme.
The game involves searching and downloading early 2000s music and movies within a predetermined time frame. Players can choose from a variety of songs and movies from that era in the simulation. Points are awarded for each virus-free simulated download.
However, it is important to note that the files collected within the game are not genuine and are not accessible to users for download or access. Nevertheless, the leaderboard will record players’ scores, and those who perform well may qualify for LimeWire’s upcoming ERC-20 token, LMWR, which is set to launch next month.
The highest-ranking 1,000 players will have the opportunity to receive a portion of the 150,000 LMWR, which will be distributed hierarchically, in addition to merchandise packages.
LimeWire was reintroduced in 2022 as an NFT marketplace to establish itself as a prominent platform for content creators and members. It’s worth noting that the original file-sharing platform was shut down in 2010 after a court case for copyright infringement, and the LimeWire NFT marketplace is not affiliated with the original platform or its team.
The rights to the company were purchased by brothers Paul and Julian Zehetmayr, who intend to restructure the brand to fit the Web3 era. The brothers acknowledged the platform’s contentious past but insisted the restructuring was crucial to the brand’s revival and promoting actual artists and their works.
