A group of twelve European Union (EU) politicians has released a statement calling for the safe development of artificial intelligence (AI) in response to a warning from Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, about the dangers of unleashing powerful AI technology before society is ready.
On April 17, 2023, Dragoș Tudorache, an EU Parliament member, published an open letter on Twitter urging cooperation and the creation of a global framework for AI research.

In the letter, Tudorache and the other lawmakers requested a summit on AI and a set of guiding principles for the creation, management, and use of the technology from both US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
They highlighted that the European Parliament is currently drafting the Artificial Intelligence Act to support the creation and adoption of reliable, human-centric AI in Europe while safeguarding individuals’ fundamental rights, safety, and health. The regulation, which covers the entire EU market, might serve as a model for other regulatory initiatives in various regulatory cultures and contexts around the world.
The letter also called on businesses and governments worldwide to prioritize an “ever-increasing sense of responsibility” in the development of AI, along with the principles of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC), a forum for the US and EU to coordinate approaches to economic and technological issues.
Furthermore, they urged democratic nations to consider potential systems of governance, oversight, co-creation, and support for the development of highly potent AI. They also encouraged other countries, including non-democratic ones, to exercise restraint and responsibility in their pursuit of extremely powerful AI.
The EU is already examining AI through its Artificial Intelligence Act, while the European Data Protection Board has established a task force for the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.
In line with the concerns raised by EU legislators, more than 2,600 IT industry leaders and researchers have called for a temporary halt to further AI development due to concerns about serious hazards to society and humanity.
On April 11, 2023, OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, announced the launch of their Bug Bounty Program. The program aims to identify and resolve security flaws in OpenAI’s systems while compensating security professionals for their efforts in safeguarding the company’s technology and operations.
The creation of the Bug Bounty Program was prompted by recent restrictions in various countries and growing concerns about security vulnerabilities, with the program intended to address privacy and cybersecurity issues.
