Elon Musk, who serves as CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter, has been in the news for leading a campaign to halt the development of artificial intelligence (AI) due to societal concerns. However, he appears to be moving ahead with his plans to establish an AI infrastructure.

According to a report from Business Insider, Musk, who has been running Twitter for the past six months and has implemented several significant changes to the platform, has procured around 10,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for his Twitter AI initiative.
GPUs are commonly employed to process large-scale AI models because of their significant computing capability. This acquisition aligns with Musk’s announcement on March 18 that Twitter intends to use AI to detect and highlight public opinion manipulation on the platform.
While the Twitter AI project may still be in its early stages, anonymous sources suggest that Musk’s procurement of a large number of GPUs indicates his strong commitment to the project. They also suggest the project is based on a substantial language model, although Twitter’s specific use of generative AI remains unclear.
Additionally, in March, Twitter added Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss, two experienced AI engineers, to its team. The two engineers had previously worked at DeepMind, an Alphabet research unit dedicated to AI research.
These developments come only a few weeks after Musk and several other tech industry bigwigs signed an open letter calling for a temporary halt to AI development because of the dangers it presents to humanity. At a 2017 meeting with the United States National Governors Association, Musk also warned policymakers about the necessity of regulating AI development before it is too late.
