During a meeting with science and technology advisers on April 4, President Biden acknowledged the potential benefits of AI in tackling global issues such as disease and climate change. However, he also stressed the importance of addressing potential risks to society, national security, and the economy.
President Biden pointed out that social media has demonstrated the adverse effects of potent technologies when proper precautions are not taken to mitigate them. Specifically, he highlighted the detrimental impact on mental well-being, self-esteem, and a sense of despair, particularly among young people. Consequently, he emphasized that technology companies have a responsibility to ensure that their products are safe before making them public.
When questioned about the potential hazards of AI, the President remarked that while still largely undefined, there is a possibility of risks. To that end, he reiterated his call for the US Congress to pass bipartisan privacy legislation that would enforce stringent limits on personal data collection by tech firms, prohibit targeted advertising towards children, and mandate prioritization of health and safety in product manufacturing.
