During a network software upgrade on February 25, 2023, the Solana blockchain experienced a slowdown in block finalization, which resulted in transaction failures. In a bid to rectify the situation and offer a quick fix, the developers downgraded the software to a previous version to improve the blockchain’s performance.
Following the event, Anatoly Yakovenko, the co-founder of Solana, published an article detailing the company’s plan to improve network performance and stability. He mentioned that there was an “ongoing investigation into last week’s downtime”; adding that “more details would be available soon.”
Yakovenko in his article outlined the issues facing the blockchain’s speed and usability. These include a lack of flow control for transactions, lack of fee markets, spiralling ram, storage, restart overhead, and invalid gas metering. He said core engineers and validators would collaborate with external auditors and developers to identify vulnerabilities on the blockchain and address these issues.
The article also laid out a six-step plan the core engineers would follow during the process. An adversarial team comprising one-third of Solana Labs’ engineering team has been formed to build additional hooks and instrumentation into the validator code to find vulnerabilities.
Yakovenko also stated that the network has over 2,000 developers who are drawn to Solana because it allows them to build their ideas on the blockchain. He emphasized the importance of community support in achieving a more decentralized future.
Solana is a Layer 1 blockchain designed to enable smart contracts and decentralized applications for mass adoption of Web3. Solana currently has an estimated 11 million accounts, over 21 million NFTs have been minted on the chain, and the blockchain network has processed over 125 billion transactions in just a little over two years.
However, the blockchain’s dependability has been called into question due to the numerous shutdowns it has experienced in the past. Solana recorded its tenth downtime last week. The network’s longest outage, which lasted 17 hours, occurred in September 2021.
