Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, is exploring ways to combat crime in the metaverse, according to its Secretary General, Jurgen Stock.
Stock reportedly announced the organization’s intention to monitor illegal activity on the metaverse, emphasizing how skilled and experienced criminals may adjust to using new technical means to perpetrate crimes.
Stock stated that criminals are skilled and professional in adapting quickly to new technological tools for committing crimes. He believes that Interpol must react accordingly,
Stock stated:
“Criminals are sophisticated and professional in very quickly adapting to any new technological tool that is available to commit crime.”
Stock believes that Interpol must react to this adequately as “lawmakers, police, and society may fall behind sometimes.”
Interpol established its presence in the metaverse at the 90th Interpol General Assembly in New Delhi in October 2022, and four months later, the decision was made to police the metaverse.
Interpol’s virtual reality environment can be accessed through secure servers and can be used for hosting training and virtual meetings for users. Police personnel can understand the potential crimes in the metaverse and how they can be investigated by experiencing it first-hand.
According to Madan Oberoi, Interpol’s executive head of technology and innovation, some crimes in the metaverse are difficult to define and apply existing definitions to, citing reports of sexual harassment as an example.
The value of the metaverse is expected to reach $36 billion by 2025, with corporations such as Coca-Cola, Nike, and Disney developing experiences there.

The World Economic Forum announced last year that it had teamed up with Interpol, Meta, Microsoft, and other organizations to define and regulate the metaverse.
