Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club, has announced the appointment of Daniel Alegre as the new CEO. Alegre previously served as president and COO of Activision Blizzard.
According to a press release from the firm, Nicole Muniz, who has previously been in charge of the NFT brand, will continue to act as a partner and strategic advisor for the NFT brand, which also owns CryptoPunks and Meebits. Alegre’s official start date as CEO will be in the first half of 2023.
Wylie Aronow, Yuga Labs co-founder, stated:
“Nicole, Greg, and I have been on the hunt for someone with Daniel’s skill set for some time. The business, our ambitions, and the complexity of the work have grown beyond our wildest expectations. We are thrilled to have him join the team to help with our vision of a truly interoperable metaverse.”
Alegre has held the position of President and Chief Operating Officer at Activision Blizzard since 2020. In this role, Alegre oversaw the international distribution and promotion of popular franchises such as Candy Crush™, World of Warcraft™, Diablo™, and Call of Duty™. Prior to joining Activision Blizzard, Alegre spent over 16 years at Google in various executive roles.
Wylie Aronow, Yuga Labs co-founder, also stated:
“Daniel has held one of the highest level roles at one of the largest gaming companies in the world, He brings valuable experience across entertainment, e-commerce, and global strategic partnerships — all of which are critical aspects of an immersive web3 world built by creators and for creators.”
In a filing last Friday, Alegre announced his departure from Activision, less than two weeks after the FTC sued to halt Microsoft’s $69 billion purchase of the Call of Duty publisher.
Daniel Alegre stated:
“Since exploding onto the scene with Bored Ape Yacht Club in 2021, Yuga Labs has quickly made a name for itself through a powerful combination of storytelling and community-building. The company’s pipeline of products, partnerships, and IP represents a massive opportunity to define the metaverse in a way that empowers creators and provides users with true ownership of their identity and digital assets. I look forward to working with the passionate, creative team at Yuga to innovate, inspire, and shape the future of the internet together.”
Yuga Labs has become well-known for its creative leadership in the Web3 sector and for pushing the boundaries of NFT technology. Yuga clarified their vast metaverse intentions when they introduced Otherside, a gamified metaverse inspired by MMORPGs, earlier this year.
