Chinese internet platforms are hurrying to join the carnival as interest in the World Cup soccer tournament grows worldwide. The country’s internet platforms are providing a “metaverse-like” viewing experience enabled by 5G and virtual reality (VR), which will allow Chinese soccer fans to watch the FIFA World Cup from within the metaverse.
The initiatives are part of a five-year strategy announced by the Chinese government in early November to advance the development of the regional virtual reality (VR) industry.
According to a report, analysts claim that the initiatives will aid the internet’s largest enterprises in securing an increase in traffic during the sporting event, but what matters more is that widespread adoption of the new technology will enable companies to enhance their product offerings.
Chinese streaming provider Migu, a subsidiary of China Mobile, and Douyin, the equivalent of TikTok in China, are two significant participants. The two streaming services will share digital coverage of the events with state-owned broadcaster China Media Group and have sublicensed rights to air live and on-demand coverage of the Qatar World Cup (CMG).
Migu and Douyin acquired the broadcasting rights for what the media has described as a “sky-high” price. The World Cup matches were only allowed to be broadcast on six mainland Chinese channels, including Migu, China Mobile, and Douyin.
To give Chinese soccer fans a surreal experience, Migu’s chief content officer, Gan Yuqing, announced in July that the company would create a virtual interactive space that would be a first in the world for watching the tournament. The event would also be live-streamed using technologies such as 5G and VR.
The phrase “Watch the World Cup live broadcast on Douyin” was displayed by Douyin on its official Weibo account. Soccer fans can invite friends from a distance into their own digital rooms to watch matches together thanks to VR headset maker Pico, which is also owned by ByteDance. Users can watch live broadcasts of the World Cup using its VR goggles.
