OpenSea, a popular NFT marketplace, has notified users on its mailing list of a data breach. This comes after some users complained on Twitter that they had received several emails from fraudulent addresses claiming to be associated with OpenSea. These emails were intended to phish the identities and personal information of unsuspecting OpenSea users.
The security breach has been traced to an employee at Customer.io, a third-party company that OpenSea uses for its social media needs.
Following the data breach, OpenSea informed its users via a blog post, advising them to be vigilant.
“We recently learned that an employee of Customer.io, our email delivery vendor, misused their employee access to download and share email addresses – provided by OpenSea users and subscribers to our newsletter – with an unauthorized external party. If you have shared your email with OpenSea in the past, you should assume you were impacted. We are working with Customer.io in their ongoing investigation, and we have reported this incident to law enforcement.”
The blog post also detailed how OpenSea users can protect themselves from phishing attempts, including:
- Users should be wary of fraudulent individuals attempting to impersonate OpenSea employees.
- Users should not download anything from an OpenSea email without first verifying the authenticity of the email.
- Users should double-check the URL of any page linked in an OpenSea email.
- Users should never share or confirm their passwords or secret wallet phrases.
- Finally, users should never sign a wallet transaction prompted directly from an email.
Scammers have recently used third-party platforms, particularly those that handle the customer relationships of blockchain platforms, to gain access to blockchain platforms. For the safety of assets, users must remain cautious of suspicious activity and file complaints to the appropriate quarters when necessary.
