The British Army lost its Twitter and YouTube accounts to hackers that promoted crypto and NFT scams on their pages.
As a result of the incident, the United Kingdom Defense Ministry announced to the public that they were aware of the hack and investigation was on its way.
“We are aware of a breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts and an investigation is underway. The Army takes information security extremely seriously and is resolving the issue. Until their investigation is complete it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Immediately after both social media channels were compromised, the hackers instantly altered the account details to give their crypto scams a genuine cover.
According to reports, the hacked Twitter account is now under the control of the British Army. The British Army used its Twitter page to apologize for the attack.
“Apologies for the temporary interruption to our feed. We will conduct a full investigation and learn from this incident. Thanks for following us and normal service will now resume.”
According to reports, the Twitter account name was changed to Bapesclan.
“At one stage, the Twitter account name was changed to Bapesclan, accompanied by a profile picture featuring an ape-like cartoon figure with make-up mimicking a clown.”
This is not the first time that Twitter accounts of notable figures have been hacked to promote crypto scams. The accounts of some verified public figures such as Barack Obama were hacked in 2020 to promote a crypto scam. This was one of the largest massive security breaches on Twitter.
