Solana went offline for the fifth time in 2022, despite the network struggling to deliver on its lofty promises.
Unlike the last time Solana went down owing to a bot assault, this downtime was due to “durable nonce instruction.” Simply put, durable nonces in Solana’s high-speed chain enable sophisticated signing arrangements. Unfortunately, they broke again, resulting in yet another lengthy outage.
After a four-and-a-half-hour downtime, validators brought the blockchain back online on Wednesday. Although Solana’s CEO, Anatoly Yakovenko, stated that a fix “would be out soon,” he unsurprisingly received a lot of criticism on Crypto Twitter.
Solana has gone offline seven times in the last 12 months. In January 2022, the blockchain battled issues for nine days. Another time, it was hit by a DDOS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack, which halted the entire network.
This series of downtime significantly impacted the price of SOL, as it dropped to $37.97 from an all-time high of over $260. Solana’s promising tech stack has earned it the moniker “Ethereum killer,” but the chain is increasingly resembling a calm cat that goes to sleep a few times too often.
