The Republic of Ireland intends to prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies as a form of donation to political parties and aspirants in the country. This comes following reports of Russia’s alleged intention to interfere with elections in various European nations by funding them with cryptocurrencies.
Some countries have begun to enact legislation to prevent this from occurring. Ireland is developing legislation to prohibit political parties from accepting cryptocurrency donations.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has fueled speculation that the country is attempting to meddle in several European elections.
The Irish government has begun drafting new legislation to oversee internal political activity, reducing the impact of foreign political donations on the country’s politics.
This approach is motivated in part by the desire to prohibit Irish political parties from accepting cryptocurrency donations. It also emphasizes the importance of parties disclosing their donations and assets.
The new legislation, according to the Independent, an Irish news media organization, would change the way things are done because the country’s Electoral Commission has been given additional power and responsibility.
Darragh O’Brien, the Local Government Minister, is currently spearheading these changes, and he stated,
“The appalling invasion of the Ukraine and the insidious disinformation war highlight the ongoing fundamental threats faced by all democracies.”
