Steve Adler, the Mayor of Austin has expressed interest in advancing the growth of crypto payments and blockchain in his city, and he has proposed two new initiatives to that end.
The first initiative proposed by the Mayor is to ensure that the city benefits from the features offered by Web3, aiding the growth of Austin.
According to the announcement, “the city has a fundamental interest in using its standing and efforts to ensure equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion in this technology ecosystem.”
The role of the city manager is to analyze the different ways that Austin can benefit from Web3 and blockchain in fields such as “data security and retention, smart contracts, document notarization, arts and music, cryptocurrencies, supply chain management”, among other things.
“The city manager is responsible for ensuring that the city helps create an environment within city government and in the broader community that supports the creation and development of new technologies, including, but not limited to, blockchain and other web3 related technologies, protocols, and applications.”
The second initiative involves exploring ways that residents could use in legally paying bills via cryptocurrency.
Adler stated in his tweet,
“Austin is excited to support the businesses and innovations that will turn the promises of Web3, cryptocurrency, and blockchain technology into reality.”
