The popular gaming guild, Yield Guild Games- YGG- has raised $1.45 million to support residents of the Philippines that were displaced by Typhoon Odette that occurred on December 16, 2021.
The money raised by YGG was utilized in buying generators, medicine, food, and other essential items, after which, were donated to the Philippines governmental organizations, as well as NGOs in the country. These organizations will distribute the donated items to those affected by the Typhoon.
Out of the $1.45 million cryptos raised for the cause, about a million dollars have been expended, leaving a remaining sum of $458,000 that is still held in the Fund as crypto. YGG intends to convert them to fiat and use them in siding with the survival of those involved.
According to YGG on Twitter,
“Our Transparency Report for Typhoon #OdettePH relief efforts is up! @yieldguild raised $1.45M and has so far disbursed a total of $992K to date. Meanwhile, our direct financial assistance program has helped 3K+ households begin to rebuild.”
One day after Typhoon Odette hit the Philippines, YGG’s Philippines division- YGG Pilipinas- swung into action, asking people to donate to aid relief efforts in the country.
According to the tweet they made on December 17, 2021,
“Getting close to the 6,000,000 pesos ($110K) mark in crypto donations. We’ll continue to raise funds all throughout the weekend while we find and assign key community leaders in each affected city. #OdettePH”
Other crypto enthusiasts and members of the Web3 community also participated in fundraising activities for the victims of Typhoon Odette. One of them was Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin, the NFT play-to-earn game Axie Infinity co-founder. He donated 1,000 AXS ($55,400) to the relief fund on Christmas Day. He noted:
“As we work together to help our brothers and sisters in the Philippines recover and rebuild, we remember that this is what our community exists for.”
