NFT collectors and the community were surprised when the auction of the collection of 104 CryptoPunks that is believed to be valued at $30 million did not take place.
On February 8, Sotheby announced that it was hosting the 104 CryptoPunks auction that was the biggest event in the NFT space.
“CryptoPunks get the Sotheby’s treatment. Our next #SothebysMetaverse sale ‘Punk It! 104 CryptoPunks. 1 Lot.’ will be a landmark LIVE Evening Auction on February 23. A truly historic sale for an undeniably historic NFT project.”
This attracted the attention of the NFT community and collectors that were interested in being part of the auction or watching it from the sidelines.
The owner of the collection, which goes by the name, 0x650d also quoted the tweet, buttressing their intent to sell.
“Today, I’m excited to announce my partnership with @Sotheby’s to create the highest profile NFT sale of all time.”
The event was meant to be hosted by Sotheby’s, the popular fine-goods auctioneer and it was expected to be the largest NFT auction in history. This was until the anonymous owner, 0x650d decided to withdraw it from the auction.
0x650d came online to state that it was not going to hold with a nonchalant tweet,
“nvm, decided to hodl”
The collector has refused to disclose the reason behind withdrawing their collections, instead, had continued to joke around when questioned by others.
0x650d went on to post a meme stating that they were “taking punks into the mainstream by roaring Sothebys”.
This event has attracted different reactions, with some people calling him a clown or using the clown emoji under his nonchalant tweet.
Haralobos Voulgaris, a quantitative researcher for the Dallas Mavericks, was one of those.
Voulgaris also stated,
“People showed up in person for this ‘historic auction’ to see just who might be dumb enough to pay an auction house premium to buy 104 basic floor punks – on the brink of WWIII no less and the seller responds with “hold my beer”.
