With the booming of the NFT space, different industries have become interested in what it offers. The sports sector is not a stranger to NFTs, and football club, FC Barcelona entered into a crypto deal with Ownix sometime ago. Various sports teams are involved in Non-Fungible tokens for varying reasons such as an alternative stream of revenue or offering fans access to a set of unique collectibles. The pandemic came with issues like the cancellation of leagues and loss of revenue, which prompted teams to look for alternative streams of income.
With the scandal that rocked NFT company, Ownix, the team decided to cut ties with the company. The cancellation occurred immediately when the news of the arrest of one of Ownix’s crypto consultants, Moshe Hogeg, was announced.
Before the partnership between FC Barcelona and Ownix was announced, other NFT platforms had been courting the team in a bid to strike a collaboration with them. It amazed quite a number of people when the team opted for Ownix instead of other companies.
FC Barcelona released the cancellation statement on its website;
“In light of information received that goes against the club’s values, FC Barcelona hereby communicates the cancellation of the contract to create and market NFT digital assets with Ownix with immediate effect.”
Ownix has taken to Twitter to debunk any link to the Israeli crypto entrepreneur, Hogeg. They stated that Hogeg does not have any shares in their company. With the arrest, Ownix terminated its connection with the Israeli.
A second popular European football team, Manchester City, also ended their NFT collaboration with 3Key in the same week.
