Bitcoin.org has been around offering information about the foremost cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. It has become a notable figure in the crypto industry, and it is a shame that it recently went offline after it suffered an attack.
The anonymous admin of the website, Cobra, stated in their Twitter account that Bitcoin.org has been compromised and they were actively looking into how to solve it.
Matt Corallo, a popular bitcoin developer, let out the warning of the site’s compromise, “Looks like bitcoin.org got hacked and the entire site replaced with a scam asking for free Bitcoin. Do *not* send funds to that address.”
He went on to ask Namecheap to take down the site temporarily until the issue is handled.
“cc @namecheap @NamecheapCEO in case y’all want to take down the scam site of all scam sites, at least temporarily (looks like the domain was updated today/stolen, possible?)”
Corallo did not stop there, he went on to tweet that Cloudflare could consider taking down the website and wait for the admin to show up once in a long time.
“And of course @cloudflare @cloudflarehelp @eastdakota in case you’d like to take the bitcoin scam site of all scam sites down until the admin shows up once a week.”
Before the website went offline, its attackers had displayed a fraudulent giveaway, stating that they would give out Bitcoin to those that gave to their addresses. They were able to fleece more than $10,000 before the site went offline.
This is not the first time that Bitcoin.org has suffered from an attack. In July this year, it suffered a DDoS attack that came with a demand for Bitcoin.
With the site going offline once again, it may take days before users can access the website.
