The platform boasts a high trading volume, with more than $12 billion being traded daily. It supports spot and margin trading, as well as options, futures, and derivatives. The exchange was launched in 2013 under the name Bter. It was later taken over by Gate Technology Inc. in 2017 and rebranded.

The platform is known for its user-friendly interface, 24/7 customer support, and mobile app. However, it is not highly regulated and does not offer the option to withdraw fiat currency. Gate.io charges competitive fees, with no deposit fees and variable withdrawal fees based on the withdrawn cryptocurrency. The exchange also offers margin trading, with leverage ratios ranging from 3X to 10X. Some services are unavailable in certain countries, including the US (in Washington and New York) and Canada.
