Coinbase has launched its own “super app” by rebranding the Coinbase Wallet into what it now calls the Base app, combining crypto trading, payments, social media, and messaging under one platform.
The announcement was made during Coinbase’s “A New Day One” conference in Los Angeles on July 16, where the company described the Base app as an “everything app” built to operate atop its Ethereum layer-2 network, Base.
According to a company blog post, the Base app evolves from being a simple wallet to an integrated ecosystem offering social networking, mini apps, chat, payments, and trading. John Granata, Coinbase’s head of product for the Base app, said the goal is to “expand economic freedom, creativity, and innovation,” hinting at a vision for the app as a foundation for a new type of social network.
The app, currently in beta with a waitlist, is designed around four key experiences: a social network powered by Farcaster, an app discovery hub, end-to-end encrypted messaging with AI agents for trading and transactions, and a trading and payments wallet.
Coinbase also introduced Base Pay, a new checkout tool enabling USDC payments across supported platforms, beginning with Shopify merchants. The feature promises near-instant and fee-free transactions, positioning USD Coin (USDC) as a practical payment method for digital commerce.
Another key addition is the “Base Account”, a universal onchain identity that simplifies wallet setup with a single sign-in. Users can discover and use mini apps directly from their feed, ranging from games to prediction markets, without requiring separate downloads.
The Base App is now rolling out in beta to waitlisted users. With this move, Coinbase aims to bring a broader audience onchain, unifying crypto’s fragmented user experience into one seamless platform. The launch also signals Coinbase’s intensified push to expand the adoption of Base, its Ethereum Layer 2 network launched in 2023.
