The crypto market has seen a significant slowdown in inflows, with a 56% decrease over the past month.
According to analyst Ali Martinez, capital inflows have dropped from $134 billion to $38 billion, indicating a decline in crypto investments.
Martinez also shared a chart illustrating the aggregated realized value net position change within the crypto market. The data highlighted a sharp decline in inflows, especially between mid-December 2024 and early January 2025, following a notably bullish November.
“This points to a significant reduction in investment activity,”
he stated. The drop in crypto market inflows suggests that investor enthusiasm for digital assets may be waning, potentially leading to a consolidation phase or “cooling off” period, where prices typically decline. Martinez’s chart indicates that significant cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, tend to mirror the movements of capital inflows, further supporting the likelihood of a slowdown in market activity.
Despite a drop in crypto market inflows, stablecoin net positions have remained steady, indicating that investors may be opting for the stability of stablecoins instead of riskier cryptocurrencies. This behaviour suggests a preference for security during uncertain market conditions and could imply that investors are biding their time for an opportune moment to re-enter the market. Traders might be positioning themselves for an anticipated market rebound sooner rather than later.
Martinez’s chart aligns with data from CoinShares’ latest report, which shows $585 million flowing into digital asset products during the first three days of 2025. However, the final two days of 2024 saw net outflows of $75 million, indicating a shift in investor sentiment as the year closed. Despite the drop in investment activity toward the end of the year, CoinShares’ research chief, James Butterfill, noted that 2024 saw a record-breaking influx into digital asset products. The year-long inflows nearly quadrupled the previous record set in 2021, highlighting sustained investor interest in the sector.
