As Nigeria positions itself as a leader in technological advancement, the Algorand Foundation has become a key player in the country’s blockchain development efforts.
With the Nigerian government introducing the National Blockchain Policy in 2023, a framework was established to drive the adoption of blockchain technology across various sectors. The policy highlights innovation and talent development as critical areas for the nation’s progress, and Algorand has aligned its initiatives with these goals to help bolster Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Since late 2023, the Algorand Foundation has been instrumental in nurturing a thriving developer ecosystem across the country. The Foundation has trained over 500 software developers in blockchain technology, preparing them for the growing digital economy. Nigerian teams showcased their skills at Algorand’s Global Hackathon and secured top spots in multiple categories. They won first place in both the Consumer and Impact tracks and were second in the DeFi category.
Building on this momentum, Algorand organized workshops in Plateau State, equipping over 50 developers with advanced blockchain skills. The Foundation also facilitated a policy dinner in December 2023, bringing together key government figures to discuss blockchain integration in public services.
By early 2024, Algorand’s collaboration with the Government of Plateau State had evolved into a formal partnership to launch pilot programs in sectors such as identity management and revenue collection.
The Foundation’s efforts also extended to the creative sector. In February 2024, it sponsored the Incredible Music Festival in Jos and hosted a workshop with NFT marketplace Algogems to teach local artists about leveraging Web3 tools. In May 2024, Algorand launched the #PythonMay series, which attracted over 200 developers.
As Algorand deepens its engagement in Nigeria, the Foundation emphasized that it remains committed to driving innovation, supporting developer success, and collaborating with local communities to unlock the full potential of blockchain technology.
The Foundation recently announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Taraba State government.
It noted that more initiatives would be announced in the coming months as it rises to solidify Algorand’s role in Nigeria’s blockchain journey.
