The Indian government has approved a $1.24 billion program to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) startups and innovations in the country for the next five years.
The program, tagged “IndiaAI Mission”, has an original budget of 10,300 crore rupees and will facilitate nationwide easy access to computing power, which is essential for AI development and release.
According to the official press release, the IndiaAI Mission comprises seven components, of which four are divided into the development and democratisation of compute capacity and indigenous multimodal models, facilitating access to quality non-personal data sets, and building AI applications.
The other three components focus on instituting AI educational courses, financing deep-tech artificial intelligence startups, and developing safety nets around AI growth.
The program is particularly focused on developing a new generation, scalable AI computing infrastructure by launching more than 10,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
In an X post accompanying the press release, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that the IndiaAI Mission will empower AI startups and push the nation to become a global industry leader in the sector.
The decision to approve the IndiaAI Mission has garnered positive reactions. The move is seen as a significant step toward fostering innovation and establishing India as a formidable player in the global AI landscape. Tuhin A. Sinha, National Spokesperson for Bjp4India, praised the efforts and anticipated an enhancement of India’s technological prowess. Tarun Chugh, National General Secretary at BJP, expressed satisfaction with the nation’s commitment to advancing in the field of AI.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, noted that the move democratised the county’s tech industry. He noted that the program would make massive computing power available to startups, innovators, students, and educational institutions.
