OpenAI has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated team focused on addressing the potential risks associated with highly advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
In a blog post released on July 5, the ChatGPT creator, announced the formation of this team to oversee and manage AI systems surpassing human intelligence. While OpenAI recognizes the transformative potential of superintelligence in solving various challenges, the AI company also acknowledge the significant risks it poses if not properly managed.
The company stated:
“But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous, and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction.”
OpenAI noted that it is difficult to align AI systems with human intent. It admitted that their current methods, which rely on human supervision and feedback, are insufficient for controlling superintelligent AI It also acknowledges the need for new techniques and approaches to ensure the safe development and deployment of such advanced AI systems.
The company also announced its commitment to allocate 20% of the computing resources it has obtained to address the challenge of superintelligence alignment in the next four years.
This announcement comes at a time when global discussions on regulating AI advancements and usage are ongoing in many parts of the world.
In June 2023, OpenAI received a cautionary notice from Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission regarding concerns about the company’s collection of private data from individuals without obtaining appropriate consent. The commission advised OpenAI to limit the acquisition of sensitive data from Japanese citizens for machine learning purposes. It further emphasized the possibility of taking additional actions if further privacy concerns arise.
Also, several executives of top European companies have advised the European Union to exercise caution on its new comprehensive regulations for the AI sector. According to these executives, the current draft of EU’s AI Act will stifle innovation and jeopardize the region’s competitiveness in the sector.
The European Parliament approved the current version of the EU AI Act on June 14, 2023. This version included regulations mandating AI systems like ChatGPT to disclose all content generated through artificial intelligence. Additionally, the Act incorporates various measures to combat illicit content effectively.
