Oxford City Football Club, a football club in the United Kingdom, has joined the ranks of sports teams that are adopting cryptocurrencies in different capacities. The National League’s football club intends to accept BTC as one of its payment options for match day tickets.
The stadium will offer BTC payment through the Lightning Network for those interested in purchasing match day tickets, food, and drinks. Fans can also make these payments via cash or card if they do not wish to pay through BTC.
To make this feasible, the Oxford City Football Club entered into a strategic partnership with CoinCorner, a cryptocurrency company based in the Isle of Man.
The cryptocurrency company will be a sponsor of the club, and as part of the collaboration, it released a limited edition Oxford City FC Bolt Card.
Justin Merritt, the director of football at Oxford City, disclosed,
“Embracing the latest technologies and innovations to ensure Oxford City FC can continue to operate as a self-sustaining club is a key part of our long-term objectives. It’s not mandatory for people to engage with our new technology, but we believe, in time, paying via Bitcoin will become the new normal in English football. ”
The CEO of CoinCorner, Daniel Scott, stated, “Innovation and forward-thinking sit at the heart of our key working objectives, just like Oxford City FC.
It’s pleasing to see the club become the first adopters of Bitcoin payment in the National League. We believe this move will set a trend across non-league and Football League divisions as digital currency establishes itself as the new normal for sports fans and event-goers across the UK.”
